Blue lotus (nymphaea caerulea) is not a true lotus flower; it’s actually a beautiful water lily that has been favored for its medicinal properties since ancient times.

Known by several names, including blue Egyptian lotus, Egyptian water lily and blue water lily, the blue lotus is a discomfort reliever, aphrodisiac and it even has some psychoactive properties.

The medicinal properties of the blue lotus were discovered thousands of years ago and it was a favorite amongst the ancient Egyptians and the ancient Mayan civilization. The blue lotus is even prominently featured in ancient Egyptian mythology and artwork. Today, the blue lotus still grows along the Nile River and in some areas of Asia (although in ancient times, the flower was far more widespread, extending to the Americas where it was utilized by the Mayans.)

Notably, some countries have banned blue lotus, including the UK, Russia, Poland and Latvia. But it remains legal in the United States.

The blue lotus is found in several different forms, with the most potent being concentrated extract, such as this product. With extracts, the number indicates how many units are concentrated down into a single unit. So, for instance, a 50x blue lotus extract would indicate that 50 ounces have been concentrated down into one ounce. Due to the nature of blue lotus, the 50x extract is not necessarily 50 times more potent (although the differential is quite significant when compared to the non-extract powder.)
